If you follow that logic, it seems that\u00a0eating mindfully\u00a0and healthfully should actually be a huge component of yoga, yet it seems to me like it barely gets a nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though I do have a regular\u00a0yoga practice, I often find myself grabbing takeout, eating quickly on-the-go, or chowing down at my desk while multi-tasking and sending e-mails. And while I look forward to my practice, I don\u2019t think enough about what I\u2019m actually putting\u00a0<em>into\u00a0<\/em>my body before and after my practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe beautiful thing about yoga practice is it helps us to connect to our bodies,\u201d says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/karalydon.com\/yoga\/nourish-your-namaste-how-nutrition-and-yoga-can-support-digestion-immunity-energy-relaxation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kara Lydon<\/a>, registered dietitian, yoga teacher, and author of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/karalydon.com\/yoga\/nourish-your-namaste-how-nutrition-and-yoga-can-support-digestion-immunity-energy-relaxation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nourish Your Namaste: How Nutrition and Yoga Can Support Digestion, Immunity, Energy and Relaxation<\/em><\/a><em>. \u201c<\/em>Practice listening to your body before and after yoga class to determine when and what to eat. Your body holds all of the wisdom to help you eat intuitively, you just haveto create the space to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help me kick start a new plan to eat more mindfully before and after I practice, I asked Lydon\u2014as well as other expert registered dietitians who are also yogis\u2014when and what to eat. Here\u2019s what we should all know about how to eat for an ideal yoga practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/.image\/t_share\/MTYwMDI1OTczODgwNzkzMDY1\/avocadotoast.jpg\" alt=\"Avocado toast is a great pre-yoga snack.\"\/><figcaption>Avocado toast is a great pre-yoga snack.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to eat before yoga class \u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you practice, you want to aim for snacks that are easy to\u00a0digest\u00a0and that will help you stay loose while you practice. Of course, what works for your body is specific and personal, which is why we asked multiple experts to give you all the information you need to make a good choices. Here are their recommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Simple carbs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/fitterfly-assets\/entity_images\/images\/000\/000\/077\/original\/carbs.png?1501062264\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cThink simple carbohydrates with small amounts of protein, fat, or fiber for staying power and energy,\u201d says Lydon. \u201cSome of my favorite pre-yoga snacks are banana or apple with peanut butter, avocado toast, or\u00a0hummus\u00a0with carrots or crackers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Energizing snacks<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wakethewolves.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/wakethewolves-best-snacks-for-workout-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cIt could be fruit and nut butter, a\u00a0smoothie, toast with avocado, or anything that feels energizing to you,\u201d says\u00a0Lauren Fowler, a registered dietitian Nutritionist and yoga teacher in the San Francisco Bay area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Easy-to-digest foods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/b6\/3d\/87\/b63d87b1843863e03ece5f408261e3e5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>&#8220;<\/strong>Before yoga, choose foods that digest easily and give you balanced energy, such as a combination of whole grain carbohydrates, protein, and fat for staying power,\u201d says\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katbrownnutrition.com\/Kat_Brown_Nutrition\/Kat_Brown_Registered_Dietitian_and_Yoga_Teacher.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kat Brown<\/a>, a registered dietitian and yoga instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Eat two hours before you practice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2016\/08\/11\/well\/well_nutritionforrunners_gif\/well_nutritionforrunners_gif-blog480-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cI recommend having a full meal two hours before a yoga class,\u201d says\u00a0Alisha Temples, a licensed dietitian and yoga teacher in Virginia. \u201cIf eating within two hours of a class, choose a light snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Avoid spicy, fatty, and acidic foods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.insider.com\/5bbcf0ea0114550fe50e9ff5?width=1100&amp;format=jpeg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>These can upset your stomach, says Temples. You\u2019ll also want to avoid foods that digest slowly, says Brown, as they could make you uncomfortable while you practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Give yourself time to digest before you practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media4.s-nbcnews.com\/i\/newscms\/2018_36\/2559076\/180907-stock-clock-plate-al-1655_b7f6410f786c5ea2cb62bfb9a5b29c5c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong>As a general rule of thumb, allow yourself one to one and a half hours to digest after a light snack and two to three hours to digest after a light meal before your yoga class, says Lydon. \u201cBut the most important thing here is to experiment and listen to your body to determine the timing that works best for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yogajournal.com\/.image\/t_share\/MTYwMDI1OTczODgwNzkyOTQ4\/quinoabowl.jpg\" alt=\"Try whipping up.a nutritious quinoa bowl for a post-yoga class meal.\"\/><figcaption>Try whipping up.a nutritious quinoa bowl for a post-yoga class meal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to eat after yoga class \u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a balanced, satisfying meal or snack with some carbohydrates, proteins, and fats will help re-fuel your mind and body. Here, our experts make some suggestions for how to refuel after you\u2019ve gotten your flow on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Choose carbs plus protein.\u00a0<\/strong>After yoga, especially if it&#8217;s a vigorous flow, you&#8217;ll want to refuel with a meal or snack that has a 3-to-1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein, which can help repair muscle tissues and restore energy levels, says Lydon.
