Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a date night with your partner \u2014 to remind yourself of all the reasons you adore each other and to relax by being wined and dined \u2014 can be great ways to stimulate your libido, says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drsadaty.com\/\">Anita Sadaty, MD<\/a>, a holistic gynecologist in Roslyn, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of many natural ways that experts say you can improve your sex life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Medical Reasons May Be Behind Sexual Problems or Disinterest<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.psychologytoday.com\/sites\/default\/files\/field_blog_entry_images\/shutterstock_514793380.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there may be a medical reason why your sex life is flagging.\u00a0Diabetes, thyroid issues, cancer, and cardiac problems can lower sexual desire. Nerve issues,\u00a0endometriosis, or other problems can cause sex to be painful for women. And certain medications \u2014 like some for blood pressure, depression,\u00a0anxiety, and even\u00a0birth control\u00a0\u2014 may inhibit desire.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to get a medical checkup if you are experiencing symptoms that affect your sex life and get your condition properly treated. You can also ask your doctor if it\u2019s possible to switch your medication to something without a sexual side effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even if you have a medical cause, it doesn\u2019t have to stop you from having satisfying sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Make Getting in the Mood for Sex a Priority<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.finsfeed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/101-Romantic-Love-Messages-For-Wife.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, having more and better sex simply requires clearing your schedule. \u201cIt&#8217;s hard to be in the mood when you have a million things on your to-do list and not much time to do it,\u201d Dr. Sadaty says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheduling sex might sound unromantic, but you put most of your important plans in your calendar, so why not sex? It\u2019s best to schedule enough time to do something relaxing first rather than hopping straight into bed, since women, especially, need to be relaxed before their libido kicks in, Sadaty says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Work on Your Mind and Notice Your Thoughts for Better Sex<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/cm\/rimage\/10588524-3x2-xlarge.jpg?v=3\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your brain is running a feedback loop of reasons you\u2019ve picked up along the way \u2014 about how you should feel guilty about sex or maybe that your body is too fat or ugly or, well, whatever \u2014 it\u2019s time to stop it in its tracks. Recognize the thought when it appears and change it to a more helpful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps your sex life because, as a\u00a0meta-analysis published in the<em>\u00a0International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology<\/em>\u00a0found, people with more open attitudes about sex are better able to explore their sexuality without guilt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Don\u2019t Forget to Use Lubricants for Better Sex<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.allure.com\/photos\/5ba3ea79ad4e0a17a53bcbd0\/master\/pass\/lube%20and%20condoms.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sex can be more pleasurable if you add a lubricant, which cuts down on friction and irritation and, therefore, discomfort, gynecologists say. You can buy an official lubricant from the drugstore or use a household oil like coconut oil. Move Your Body to Improve Your Sex Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.everydayhealth.com\/images\/how-to-train-if-you-have-an-ectomorph-body-type-722x406.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not think that the exercise you do for your heart and muscles is important for good sex, but remember that blood flows to your genitals as much as to your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men with\u00a0erectile dysfunction (ED), for example, can sometimes reverse this problem with a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jsm.12483\/abstract\">study published in the<em>\u00a0Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/em><\/a>. (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/jsm.12483\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>) Even in men requiring ED medication, healthy lifestyle changes likely add to the benefits, the researchers found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Get Enough Sleep for Good Sex<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/images.deccanchronicle.com\/dc-Cover-301amf4b05dnul68iphkr6suc5-20170202164357.Medi.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep is another lifestyle factor that impacts libido. One reason is that hormone secretion is controlled by the body\u2019s internal clock, and sleep patterns likely help the body determine when to release certain hormones related to sex.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For both men and women, feeling tired when you get into bed zaps whatever libido you may have had even moments earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, for men, getting enough sleep can boost the level of testosterone (a lower level can be associated with sexual dysfunction), according to a\u00a0review published in the journal\u00a0<em>Brain Research<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. In a\u00a0study by Canadian researchers published in November 2016 in the\u00a0<em>Archives of Sexual Behavior<\/em>, women suffering from anxiety-related sexual dysfunction significantly boosted their sexual responsiveness after being trained in mindfulness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the mind-body practice of yoga can aid your libido. When a group of 40 women were instructed to practice an hour of yoga each day, their average scores on a sexual function questionnaire for desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, lower pain, and overall satisfaction increased, according to\u00a0research\u00a0published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/em>.  The yoga postures they did were basic poses believed to improve pelvic muscle tone, release tight hip joints, and boost mood, followed by breathing exercises and relaxation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Consider Acupuncture Treatments to Improve Sex\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.medicaldaily.com\/sites\/medicaldaily.com\/files\/styles\/full\/public\/2016\/10\/10\/acupressure-poinst.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture, in which a practitioner strategically places needles in the body, can also enhance your sex life. Balancing and relaxing the body with acupuncture has long been used to boost libido, says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bastyrclinic.org\/providers\/baljit-khamba-nd\">Baljit Khamba, ND<\/a>, a naturopathic doctor and&nbsp;an assistant professor of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturopathic.org\/content.asp?contentid=59\">naturopathic medicine<\/a>&nbsp;at Bastyr University California in San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khamba coauthored\u00a0a\u00a0study published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine<\/em>\u00a0in which 35 men and women with sexual dysfunction, likely caused by antidepressants they were taking, were treated with nine acupuncture sessions. At the end, libido had improved in women, while erection, timing of ejaculation, and ability to orgasm were enhanced in men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. See What Some Herbs, aka Aphrodisiacs, Can Do for You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/goop.com\/app\/uploads\/1999\/02\/aphrodisiac-TRI825644.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some herbs are used by cultures around the world as aphrodisiacs. Some are believed to stimulate nerves in your genitals; others increase levels of nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the genitals, and the feel-good chemicals in your brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these herbs include Chinese ginseng, Cordyceps,\u00a0gingko\u00a0biloba, and muira puama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugstores and health-food stores sometimes market products for sexual health that are a combination of herbs and supplements, including the amino acid L-arginine. A study of one of these products, ArginMax for Women, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/713846828\">published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy<\/em><\/a>. (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/713846828\" target=\"_blank\">7<\/a>) It found that more than two-thirds of the women taking this product \u2014 which contains\u00a0ginseng, ginkgo biloba,\u00a0damiana, vitamins, minerals, and L-arginine \u2014 reported an increase in sexual desire and overall sexual satisfaction<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Masturbate or Self-Stimulate for Better Sex<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lifehacker.com.au\/content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/12\/Sex-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By experimenting on yourself, you can come to better know what satisfies you sexually \u2014 information you can then convey to your partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For women, masturbation may have other benefits as well. Vaginal dryness and pain may be reduced when you spend time stimulating yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why sex therapists often recommend masturbation as a tool for women having trouble\u00a0reaching orgasm.
