This list isn\u2019t complete, but it will give you a good idea of where to start and what to avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fat has gotten\u00a0a bad rap. But, we encourage healthy consumption of &#8220;good&#8221; fats as part of the\u00a0clean eating lifestyle. This list of clean cooking oils isn&#8217;t complete, but can serve as a great resource for those who are embarking on a\u00a0clean eating diet plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good Cooking Oils:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Olive Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hips.hearstapps.com\/hmg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/images\/pouring-extra-virgin-olive-oil-royalty-free-image-1597238508.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Olive oil is one of the main sources of fat in the much-beloved Mediterranean diet. It\u2019s a monounsaturated fat with a deserved reputation for being extremely heart-healthy. And copious research shows that greater adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet (including plenty of monounsaturated fat) is associated with a significant reduction in mortality. But all olive oil is not created equal. Unrefined extra-virgin olive oil is best. Because it\u2019s pressed at very low levels of heat, the precious health-giving polyphenols are preserved. So don\u2019t ruin it by heating it at high temperatures!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Almond Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/FdSpzzf3qb6ajjiFwMlFZHuonOlqLalt_wgGRt4KAO7oBPe-1ZIm3tzXS8giWe_DymW5C1QUh--pBcttWu0LuzI0RpxLAnonSHl3FZT5WGN3Ix8vZuCXuGjgiAf6XIaZdw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A good oil with a high level of monounsaturated fat and a high smoke point (430\u00b0F).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peanut Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cdnparenting.com\/articles\/2019\/04\/01113009\/217679944-H.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another oil high in monounsaturated fat, but because of its omega-6 content, it\u2019s best to use unrefined peanut oil in moderation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sesame Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img2.exportersindia.com\/product_images\/bc-full\/2020\/2\/6395704\/sesame-oil-1582265339-5308826.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Used extensively in Asia, sesame oil contains some monounsaturated fats. Some of its benefits come from its unique antioxidants, which aren\u2019t destroyed by heat. It also contains phosphatidylcholine, an important nutrient for the brain. I\u2019d limit its use, however, because it does have a high amount of omega-6 fats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coconut Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pridemagazineng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Ngik9kpTURBXy8xNDUwNDI2YTMyNTVjY2QzMDFkYzIyOWFhMzYyNzVjMy5qcGeSlQMAGc0DIM0BwpUCzQMHAMPDgqEwAaExAQ.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Coconut oil\u00a0is a superfood. Most of the saturated fat in coconut oil is the type known as medium chain triglycerides, which the body prefers to use for energy rather than store as body fat. It contains a couple of powerful antimicrobal fatty acids \u2014 lauric acid and caprylic acid \u2014 and produces ketones, a wonderful source of energy for the brain. This is a good example of a fat that was wrongly demonized because it\u2019s saturated. It also holds up to high heat very well and imparts a nice, nutty taste to foods. I often mix it with butter to lighten up the taste a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Butter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2017\/02\/23\/butter1_wide-b23d6a7af9100ca3d155a4bd7a2f90e2ae3d1bfe.jpg?s=1400\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Butter from grass-fed cows is a wonderful fat. You can\u2019t beat the taste, it stands up to heat and new research indicates that full-fat dairy such as butter has significant health properties and may even help combat obesity. Its kissing cousin,\u00a0ghee, is essentially clarified butter (i.e., with the milk solids removed) and is used throughout India and in Ayurvedic medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Palm Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/post.healthline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/AN405-palm-oil-fruit-732x549-Thumb-1-732x549.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Palm oil\u00a0(not palm kernel oil) is another plant-based saturated fat that&#8217;s been unfairly demonized. It\u2019s high\u00a0in a particular type of vitamin E called tocotrienols, which have been shown to have a protective effect on the brain. I strongly recommend Malaysian palm oil \u2013 due to the Malaysian government&#8217;s pro-environmental policies, this oil is produced using sustainable practices. I use this oil all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bad Cooking Oils:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canola Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/hlcmsresource\/images\/AN_images\/is-canola-oil-healthy-1200x628-facebook.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All canola oil (except organic) is GMO, and is highly processed, to boot. Despite its (undeserved) reputation as a health food, I would not have this oil in my kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soybean Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theweek.in\/content\/dam\/week\/news\/india\/2020\/January\/soya-bean-soyabean-Soybean-oil-cooking-food-shut.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This oil is almost always refined, and \u2014 unless it\u2019s labeled organic \u2014 is GMO.
